OC Vice Chair Katrina Foley Releases Statement Following Orange County Transportation Authority Board Meeting on Cooperative Agreement with the City of Newport Beach for the Newport Transportation Center Relocation Feasibility Study and $2.6 Million in Project V funding for the City of Newport Beach’s Balboa Island/Corona del Mar Local Area Transit Service

ORANGE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA — Today, the Orange County Transportation Authority supported Director Foley’s motion to approve a joint feasibly study with the City of Newport Beach to re-locate the Newport Transportation Center (NTC), which is current located at 1550 Avocado Avenue in Newport Beach. The ultimate purpose of the study is to determine if the City of Newport Beach can re-locate Fire Station No. 3 to the current site of the NTC to increase response times for the community.

“Each minute matters when responding to fires and medical emergencies,” said OC Supervisor Katrina Foley, OCTA Director. “I support Newport Beach’s goal of enhancing public safety while continuing to provide vital, safe, and reliable public transportation for the hundreds of thousands of riders that have relied on the current Newport Transportation Center since 1991.”

Item 20 - Cooperative Agreement with the City of Newport Beach for the Newport Transportation Center Relocation Feasibility Study: The joint feasibility study will assess alternative sites, ridership impacts, operational considerations, environmental and regulatory requirements, and opportunities for improved regional mobility. The OCTA Board of Directors directed staff to complete the feasibility study within 12 months.

Item 19 - Programming Recommendation for the City of Newport Beach Project V Service: Last month, OCTA Board of Directors approved programming recommendations for the fifth Measure M2 Project V call for projects. At that time, the Board of Directors requested that staff work with the City of Newport Beach on operational refinements for its proposed Project V service. These efforts are completed, and the Board of Directors unanimously approved Project V funding in the amount of $2,624,060 for the City of Newport Beach’s Balboa Island/Corona del Mar Local Area Transit Service.

“Investing in this Project V service is a major win for the residents and visitors of Newport Beach,” said OC Supervisor Katrina Foley, OCTA Director. “By connecting key destinations like Balboa Island and Corona del Mar through a convenient, seasonal trolley, we are helping reduce congestion, improve coastal mobility, and offer a reliable alternative to driving. This program enhances access to local businesses and recreation, while relieving parking pressures in some of our most visited coastal communities. We are proud to partner with the City Newport Beach to deliver a cleaner, more connected way to move along the coast.”
