OC Vice Chair Katrina Foley Releases Statement on Upgraded Tsunami Advisory Issued for the West Coast — Including Entire Orange County Coast
ORANGE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA — Today, Orange County Vice Chair Katrina Foley released a statement regarding the National Tsunami Warning Center’s issuance of a tsunami advisory for the entire West Coast, following a reported 8.8 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Russia earlier today. The potential tsunami is projected to make landfall in Newport Beach and South Orange County at approximately 1:10 a.m.
“Following the County’s Tsunami protocol, we have closed all Orange County Parks managed beaches, including Capo Beach, Salt Creek Beach, and Baby Beach. Under advisory protocol, the County deployed additional park rangers and OC lifeguards to support with clearing efforts of county beaches, as rip tides and rip currents are anticipated. The Dana Point Harbor Marina also notified boaters to prepare and even move boats to deeper waters if conditions worsen,” said Vice Chair Katrina Foley. “At this time, no evacuation orders are in place. Until conditions are cleared by emergency management officials, please avoid all beaches, harbors, marinas, including as spectators. My office remains in conversation with our OC Sheriff’s Department, our County Executive Office, and city officials to assess potential evacuation needs for residents in low laying areas along the coast. We are also monitoring the potential closure of our Coastal Rail. We will share updates as more information becomes available.”
