OC Vice Chair Katrina Foley Releases Statement on Crystal Cove Bluff Erosion and Temporary OCTA Rail Closure
ORANGE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA – On Tuesday, Orange County Board of Supervisors Vice Chair Katrina Foley released a statement following the significant bluff erosion near Crystal Cove State Park that prompted Caltrans to close one southbound lane between Irvine Cove and Reef Point Drive.
Coastal conditions forced a temporary rail closure after waves compromised protective rock barriers this morning that only reopened after Metrolink crews installed 10 tons of ballast to stabilize the track. Service resumed with speed restrictions and inspections after each train movement and significant service delays are expected and work continues.
“Orange County is already experiencing serious coastal erosion as we prepare for the escalating impacts of a historic El Niño winter, and the storm season has yet to begin,” said Vice Chair Katrina Foley. “From waves overtopping our railroad tracks in San Clemente and disrupting rail service, to bluff erosion forcing the closure of a lane on Pacific Coast Highway in Laguna Beach, our coastal transportation infrastructure and beach economy are increasingly under threat. We must work urgently with our state and local partners to stabilize and protect our coastal transportation infrastructure, restore critical services, and invest in long term nature-based solutions that strengthen our coastline against the growing impacts of a changing climate.”
