Supervisor Foley Joined Chairman Doug Chaffee & Waymakers Chief Program Officer Lita Mercado in Announcing Relief Fund for Victims and Families
ORANGE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA — Today, Supervisor Foley announced $150,000 in discretionary funding towards the 7-Eleven Shooting Victims’ Relief Fund in a press conference with Chairman Doug Chaffee and Waymakers Chief Program Officer Lita Mercado. The fund was created as a result of a unanimous vote held yesterday by the Board of Supervisors to support the victims and families of those affected by the July 11, 2022 shootings at 7-Eleven stores in Orange County.
Last week, the 7-Eleven shooting and robbery spree resulted in the deaths of Matthew Rule of Santa Ana and Matthew Hersch of Brea as well as three other injured individuals. The fund will support everyday expenses resulting from the aftermath of this tragedy which may include funeral expenses, medical expenses, grief counseling, witness expenses, and more.
“Orange County is experiencing an epidemic in gun violence, and it must end. Families should be able to go to the grocery store, church, school, or drive our freeways without fear of gun violence,” said Supervisor Foley. “I’m grateful for law enforcement partners who quickly brought justice to these families and expeditiously caught the suspects. In the meantime, we have a responsibility as a County to take care of the victims of this senseless gun violence. We will ensure that together with Waymakers OC that the families experiencing unimaginable tragedy have the resources to care for their needs, and we hope the community join us multiplying the value of our seed funding of the Victims’ Relief Fund.”
